Painting a model vehicle

  • Paint all body pieces at the same time so the colors match. (body, hood, mirrors bumpers etc.)
  • Etch out panel lines with tool so when the paint fills them they still look believable and will take panel liner
  • Draw over mold lines (not panel lines) with a marker.
  • Sand the surface till the mold lines are no longer visible
  • Wash the model with Dawn dishwashing liquid to remove oils from the surface.
  • wipe off with tack cloth or blow off with air
  • Make sure your work area is dust free
  • Paint with grey sand-able primer
  • let dry about an hour
  • wet sand till smooth (repaint and sand areas that were sanded through)
  • Paint with white sand-able primer
  • let dry about an hour
  • wet sand till smooth (repaint and sand areas that were sanded through)
  • Paint the color coat. Paint the hard to reach areas first along with the bottom up. Paint the full panels last
  • let dry at least an hour for the paint to gas out
  • If necessary, wet sand till smooth (repaint and sand areas that were sanded through)
  • In a glass baby food jar, mix 4:1 clear coat to fast hardner use separate pipettes to transfer liquids
  • Paint with 2K clear coat.
  • 3 coats, 1 light 2 heavy wet and thick drying 20 minutes between
  • let dry
  • wet sand till smooth (repaint and sand areas that were sanded through)
  • Paint highlights and other items with acrylic so as to no re-activate the clear coat
