Building the model

Overall it is a pretty solid model kit. pieces fit together pretty well and there was not a bunch I need to trim. The phone cord on the old style phone was too weak to make it off the sprue in one piece, but i can figure something out to replace it if I use the phone in the diorama. I am planning on using most of the pieces in the BS&RN garage build. These two mechanics will be in on the action.

The parts of this model will create:

  • Workbench with pegboard back and bench mounted vice
  • 6 oil cans (with multiple different labels to chose from)
  • cardboard box to hold oil cans
  • oil bucket
  • oil drum with transfer pump
  • 3 ton floor jack
  • 3 legged engine stand
  • 4 jack stands
  • old time phone
  • old style soda machine
  • gasoline can
  • 20 gallon air compressor
  • 2 mechanics one standing one kneeling with a spray gun

It would have been nice if they had included some rubber hosing to go between the air compressor and the hand held spray gun. and a funnel, a can opener and a pouring spout for the cans of oil. Here is an example of one of the least well fitting of the parts. I was able to fill with small amounts of putty and after painting you don’t see the issues.

there are some good accessories available, I am still struggling a little with paint and impatient drying times.

I tried to use the Molitov liquid chrome pen but it would not apply using the actual pen. I ended up making a small puddle on a piece of sprue and applying it using a tooth pick so I don’t think it came out as mirror like as it should have. I may give it another coat after it dries fully. As you can see I also had a little trouble with the decals. The top one got cut in two pieces by my very sharp tweezers, from a far enough distance it is not as noticeable. This red was hand painted still since I am not yet comfortable with my air brush. It is time to get that going. I’m sure it would have had a smoother finish.

I like the detail on the accessories. The decal for the gas can really sets it off. I initially had painted the bench top as wood, but realized metal is the better choice for a shop. The Oil cans are a little dated but I can add them as decoration and I will have to make a spout from some thick foil. It isn’t too much of a leap since I still have some of these down in my shop that my dad gave me for my collection.

The two mechanics need some painting attention and the blue of the ac compressor never really dried and will need a repaint. It was a good few hours of model making while taking care of my sick girlfriend (pneumonia) and watching football. Very enjoyable and something better to do with my hands than use them to stuff my face with beers. I will post an update when I get the guys painted and locate them in the BS&RN garage.
